Look for Red Flags in Job Postings
It is important that you protect yourself from scams or individuals who take advantage of people who are not working. Some of these situations can be extremely dangerous which is why it’s so important that you remain aware and cautious throughout your search efforts.

It is important that you protect yourself from scams or individuals who take advantage of people who are not working. Some of these situations can be extremely dangerous which is why it’s so important that you remain aware and cautious throughout your search efforts.
The following are possible red flags:
- They are requesting too much personal information. There are laws that protect you from questions about your race, religion, age, origin, etc. If a job posting asks personal questions or for a photo – do not apply.
- There is a cost attached to applying for the position. It doesn’t make a difference if the cost is $5 or $500, legitimate companies do not have you pay to interview.
- The application asks for your social security number or drivers’ license number up front to run so called credit checks. This is a very common scam for individuals involved in identify theft.
- The job posting had no company name, address, or email address. Some employers as well as recruiters run blind ads, but after you call in, you should be given information on their company so you can check them out before sending any information.
- No specific job title is provided and the ad appears to be directed at all job seekers. Often these are individuals or companies who will try to sell you something vs. offering you a job.
- Interviews are held in a private vs. public setting. Some employers do interview in restaurants or hotels, but they rent out conference rooms not private hotel rooms. Always protect yourself and if your gut is telling you something is just not right – listen to your instincts.
- The opportunity appears, too good to be true. In most instances, it is probably a front for a scam or they are trying to obtain your personal information.
- The job title doesn’t match the job description. If the job description is way beneath the title of the job, chances are the compensation will also be well beneath your desired salary level.
- The salary range is too broad. If a job is advertised as paying $10 to $40 an hour, it is rare that they will ever offer the top of this range. Often, this method is used to attract a higher caliber of job seeker who is interested in the top of the range.
- The job as been posted for months which almost always indicates one of two possibilities:
- The job was filled and the recruiter forgot to take down their posting
- The job is not worth your time to apply
43 Best Job Search Websites 2016 by HANNAH MORGAN on JANUARY 19, 2016
Welcome to this year’s list of the best job search websites for 2016.
If you are new to job search, you probably have questions- how much money should I ask for, what questions will I be asked in an interview, what is the best way to find a job today, and many others.
This definitive list is carefully curated for accurate, contemporary information and guidance from job search experts. I’ve compiled these resources based on several criteria: First, I regularly reference these sites myself to share quality content on social media. Two, in my opinion, the author(s)/publisher show an understanding of modern job search trends and methodologies. And third, these sites consistently provide answers to popular job search questions. Technically there are even more than 43 sites listed!
All these resources are free because I don’t support companies that take advantage of job seekers. However, most do offer workshops, books, courses or paid services. I think most people can conduct a successful job search without paying a lot of money, but… savvy job seekers and careerists know when they need to invest in themselves.
You will find sites listed in alphabetical order under each category.

Social Recruiting Myth #5: Facebook Is No Good for Recruitment
By Lisa Jones
Do you use Facebook for recruitment? The majority of recruiters I meet negatively (and physically) react when I ask the question:
“Are you using Facebook to recruit?”
They cringe, frown, look at me like I am totally mad… Why?
They tell me that they don’t want people to see their private space online (oh the irony of that statement).
I am stumped. I have written recruiter privacy online before - Do Recruiters Have the Right to Privacy Online. I just don’t get how people can spill their private lives online and still expect to have a split-personality and be professional online too (plus it seems like a lot of effort!)
So, in my experience the average recruiter is scared of using Facebook to recruit because they are worried about how this will impact upon their privacy, but does this mean that Facebook is no good for recruitment – I say a BIG NO to that!
Let’s get jiggy with some fact-stats for a moment:

I am stumped. I have written recruiter privacy online before - Do Recruiters Have the Right to Privacy Online. I just don’t get how people can spill their private lives online and still expect to have a split-personality and be professional online too (plus it seems like a lot of effort!)
So, in my experience the average recruiter is scared of using Facebook to recruit because they are worried about how this will impact upon their privacy, but does this mean that Facebook is no good for recruitment – I say a BIG NO to that!
Let’s get jiggy with some fact-stats for a moment:
- 1.1 billion people on Facebook – we can claim that they are all dog-grooming-cat-loving-not-looking-for-job-14-year-olds, but 1.1 billion is still almost 5 times the size of LinkedIn and double Twitter. (Most recruiters I know think that size matters!)
- Mark Z has been rumoured to say something like “recruitment excites him” and if you twin that with his other rumoured maniacal laugh, something exciting could be coming to a Facebook page near you (perhaps it already has, enter Graph Search stage right!)
- 29% of US people get on to Facebook whilst at work (Statista) – I am not convinced that 29% of the US population are community managers, so let’s assume that Facebook is just “something they do at work” as well as eat, drink, talk, breathe… (I hope this is not too subtle a point…)
- Recruiters have this misguided belief that LinkedIn is where the candidate is “at” – funny that only 8.8% of people in the same poll are on LinkedIn while the other 29% are on Facebook…
- 1 in 5 updates on Facebook last year were job-related, plus 1 in 5 Facebook contacts are work contacts (AllFacebook).
- Only 22% of recruiters use Facebook for recruiting (Bullhorn Reach) – but those that did placed more candidates through it that through Twitter. 16.7% is a pretty good figure and should not be sniffed at!
- Have you tried the Home app – it’s probably the single most disruptive app I have ever used – it totally takes over your phone (and thus your life!) – but think, some people love this and they are candidates too! How can this be used by recruiters to get on radar and capitalise on Facebook?
- Deloitte said at a conference I was at recently that their Facebook page was one of the largest traffic drivers to their careers page (and they don’t put jobs on it – put that in your pipe and…)
- Have you even tried searching for talent using the new (ish) Graph Search feature – good lord – give it a go, it’s the sort of thing that makes me rub my knees with awe!
10 Popular Twitter Hashtags for Job Seekers to Follow - PayScale.com
Hiring managers are beginning to veer away from conventional methods of advertising job vacancies, and they are, instead, turning to social media to locate qualified candidates. Their weapon of choice? A little thing known as a hashtag. See how hashtags are a candidate’s best friend when it comes to finding a job in today’s digital age.
This probably isn’t the first time that you’ve heard of conducting a job search on social media, and you’re probably a bit reluctant to give it a shot, too; because, really, how can a site like Twitter actually help you find your dream job? Surprisingly, it happens more often than not, and here is the success story of one social-savvy professional who got hired through Instagram, of all places.
A great way to find relevant hashtags is to use Hashtagify.me, a free online service that allows users to search hashtags and verify their popularity on Twitter. This tool is useful for job seekers to see which hashtags are most effective to their job search efforts, and which aren’t. Simply type a hashtag into the search box and Hasttagify.me will generate a spiffy interactive diagram that also displays other hashtags that are closely related to the one you originally searched. Here is a list of 10 popular hashtags that job seekers are encouraged to follow during their job hunt:

10. Industry specific hashtags: For example, if you’re looking for an IT job, then try your luck with “#ITjobs” or “#techjobs” so that your search is more industry-specific.

Remember, don’t be afraid to get creative with your hashtag searches, because that’s how you’re going to find those hidden gems-of-a-job during your online hunt. Happy job searching, candidates!

Benefits of job board aggregators
The main reason for you to use an aggregator is that you will search through all jobs in one go. You will not find as many results from your search anywhere else. The comprehensive search will pull up results from job boards, newspaper’s job sections, company career pages, recruiter sites and more.
The other reason to use a job search engine is that you save lots of time. Instead of hopping through 10 job boards per day, just use your favourite aggregator and rest assured that you have all bases covered. The time you save can be put to good use for the other aspects of your job search.
Warning: lots of results and duplicates For obvious reasons, the aggregated sites will render long lists of results from your search terms. You will want to be as specific as possible when searching to narrow down the findings. Enter not only your skill but sub-skill, not only your town but actual zip code to begin with to keep results more specific.
The job search engines will also deliver a great deal of duplicate job postings. If a role is posted on three different sites (company, job board and recruiter), you are likely to get all three results from your search. Be aware of this and do not apply for the same job three times as it will not do you any favors.
