Happy Veterans Day
|
I created helping-Veterans.org focused effort built upon our very successful networking group model of Neighbors-helping-Neighbors USA which began January 2011, after doing a job search skills presentation in Fernando Alonso's Fairleigh Dickenson University class of GI bill young veterans, the idea to create Veterans-helping-Veterans USA was born.
Soon after I met AJ Luna who was the Director of Veterans programs at FDU and we have been working together ever since. helping-Veterans is a community in social media, and with this landing page a new LinkedIn Group and a Facebook Group to share jobs and helpful job search and networking tips.
My father Raymond was also drafted into the Navy in WWII, which also connects me to veterans and their needs.

On behalf of the Harrison Park Community Center here in Illinois, I just wanted to thank you for putting together your collection of Veteran support resources on your web page! My name is Annie Pruitt and I'm one of the program directors for the center. We will be hosting an Accessibility for Special Needs seminar next month that's open to the public. We're doing some renovations to our center this summer to make it more handicap accessible, so we thought we would use this time to educate the public as well! I'm putting together a reference guide with the rest of the staff. The health and safety information for Veterans/those who are wounded that you shared was such a big help -- we really appreciate it! To pay it forward, my assistant Juliana asked me to send you this 'Home Modifications for Wounded Warriors' that she found... https://www.realestateagents.com/articles/home-modifications-for-wounded-warriors An Extensive List of Vital Resources For Veterans In Need. A veteran is a person who has spent years in serving armed forces, particularly someone who has assisted in combats. It also includes the National Reserve and Guard. see site
I consider equity, diversity, and inclusion to be an incredibly powerful concepts when one considers the meaning of each word. To illustrate this, equity is a word that conveys empathy and compels us to provide resources according to the individual's needs. Diversity refers to the awareness that there is someone missing due to a policy, procedure, or practice that, on its surface, appears neutral, but actually serves as a mental or physical barrier.
Then there is inclusion, which implies that after we have welcomed a range of highly qualified individuals, we must intentionally include them in decision-making processes or risk unintentionally excluding them. It has long been my conviction that equity, diversity and inclusion cannot simply be a slogan. Instead, these words must communicate to the workforce and to the general public the commitment of the organization's leadership team to disrupt its status quo. All too often, leaders buy into the idea of equity, diversity, and inclusion, but fail to take the necessary steps to empower supervisors, employees, and the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) officer. I am not sure whether this is a deliberate decision or if it is the result of an oversight. In my experience, if leadership is not fully committed, then it will be difficult to change behaviors and beliefs that contributed to the culture of exclusion. While serving in the United States Army, the world's greatest organization, I gained a deep understanding of the 11 Universal Principles of Leadership. The principles teach leaders the importance of self-awareness, empathy, and effective communication skills. When I lead EDI workshops I refer to the 11 Universal Principles, and I'm amazed at how little executive leaders know about the existence of these universal principles. This is not a judgment statement, I am simply pointing out that this valuable information is not universally known. As far as I know, no successful EDI program has ever been implemented without senior leadership support. Conversely I do not possess enough digits to count the number of failed EDI programs that were underfunded and ignored by the very people who insisted that an EDI office be created in the first place. My starting point for this article was to highlight the power of EDI when it is properly supported. To conclude, I would like to note that if you are reading this article, you fall into one of two categories. You are either consciously and intentionally supporting the EDI program in your organization, or you are unconsciously and unintentionally subverting it. I strongly encourage all of you to research the 11 Universal Principles of Leadership, as I am confident that there are solutions there for every problem a leader, teammate, or employee might face. Since 1948, the 11 Principles have been used by the Department of Defense, and if the government can rely on them for national security, I am confident that they will also benefit your organization. -Richard Pete Hill helping Links

I have a great couple of resources. The first one is Scott Codacovi who is a Finacial Adviser and started a Chamber of Commerce down the shore for veterans. He has a plethora of contacts in the job field for veterans. A lot of private company’s are in his contacts for veterans lookin for jobs. I would forward this to him - scott.codacovi@ampf.com Then, I would have those Veterans look at... #1; do they have a profile built on USA JOBS? If not, they need to. For that you need a basic resume, their DD214 and if any disability ratings (for 10 points). Getting that done and done well is the 1st step. Reason is, when they start searching and applying for jobs, their 214 and resume are attached to the job you apply for. https://www.usajobs.gov/ #2; hire heroes They are the real deal. They need to get on the waiting list as soon as they can. They assign you a case agent that stays with you until you get hired. For USA Jobs they are very good at taking the job opening and tailoring your resume to it, so when it gets submitted you have a much better shot of getting an interview. https://www.hireheroesusa.org #3 Recruit Military - always has good job fairs fa and is a good place to go get your name out there. Hope this helps. Best, SGT Brett D'Alessandro Brett@backpacksforlife.org Backpacks For Life, Inc. Military-Civilian Group works to connect military veterans seeking civilian jobs with companies who have open career opportunities. If you or anyone in your network is looking for work either stateside or overseas, I encourage you to check out the open jobs posted in the Careers Directory of my site http://www.military-civilian.com. All career postings are free to view, with no login required, and you can submit your resume directly there. You can also sign up for our Hot Jobs newsletter to get all our career listings straight to your inbox. Military MOJO is a premier veteran hiring event hosted nationally. Our candidates are exclusively Officers (including Warrant Officers) and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers. There are no fees for hires at MOJO and we encourage companies to bring additional staff so they may interview on-site at the career fair. Each candidate receives a resume review and is prepped for the face to face with employers. This ensures ROI for both the candidates and the companies attending our events. We offer corporate sponsorships, veteran outreach opportunities and pricing for small businesses.

Founder & Owner VetEmploy | Human Capital Management | Consulting GI Bill Comparison Tool Colleagues and Fellow Veterans, What’s the first thing you do when shopping for a big ticket item? You might shop around, ask friends and relatives for their opinion or compare items online. In today’s world of instant online access to a wealth of consumer information – from online reviews to info graphics comparing products, product websites and online shopping sites – consumers are used to finding and comparing information online before they buy. Thanks to VA’s new GI Bill® Comparison Tool (http://benefits.va.gov/gibill/comparison), you can now find information online about Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits and the schools and training programs available to education beneficiaries. Before this tool launched, estimating how much beneficiaries may receive under the Post-9/11 GI Bill benefit was challenging. The new comparison tool makes it easy to estimate Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits with just one click. In addition, you can find and compare information on our 10,000+ approved education and training programs, including estimated tuition and fee amounts and your projected housing allowance. Also available are each school’s graduation rate, student loan default rate and Yellow Ribbon participation. Together, the GI Bill benefit estimator and school comparison information enable students to compare education options and make the best decision for their future. In the future, VA will add additional functionality to the tool, including the ability to compare up to three schools side-by-side. V/R, Curtis L.
