The Purpose of resume is to get interviews. If you are not getting interviews you need to consider improving your resume, cover letter and LinkedIn Profile.

There is two types of resume advice given by all sorts of people who work in this area. The important thing to remember is that there are Facts about resumes, advice that is researched based and proven over time scientifically, and there are opinions of all kinds some valuable most not. You also have to own the process of building your resume and directing it and all your marketing materials to the job and career you desire.

A resume is to provide a summary of your skills, abilities and accomplishments. It is a quick advertisement of who you are. It is a "snapshot" of you with the intent of capturing and emphasizing interests and secure you an interview. It is not an autobiography. Since your resume is a primary tool in your job search, it needs to be carefully written and critiqued. The rest of this website is designed to guide you through the process.
If you can afford to have your resume enhanced by a professional it makes sense and gets you ready for your job search campaign much faster with the appropriate tools you need.
The purpose of the cover letter is to:
  • Make a good case for the match between you and the position for which you are applying.
  • Show how you are unique in your ability to add value to the organization.
  • Focus on your qualifications for the position.
  • Provide an example of your writing abilities.
  • Convey interest in the company and position and an eagerness to be considered.
  • Convey your passion for the work you do.
Cover letters should be tailored specifically for the position to which you are applying.  At some organizations they are indicated as being "Optional," take it upon yourself to make it mandatory.

Bear in mind that the letters you write not only convey your interest and qualifications, but also give the employer an opportunity to observe your attentiveness to detail, spelling, grammar and the overall quality of your written communication.

Cover letters where you are looking to change careers the key is to talk about skills that are similar to what they need, also have a reason why you want to go into this new field make it very positive, these need to be done for each company you apply to and add a little something specific about the company, you can use this as template but just don't send the same form cover letter to everyone.  The cover letter gives you a chance to sell yourself to the company or at least to interest them enough to bring you in for interview, then your dynamic personality takes over when you get in the door.
